Usha’s time spent in Trinidad and Tobago while growing up has had an impact in her figurative Impressionism work.
Statement
Abstraction allows me to tap into my innermost feelings and emotions in a more spontaneous manner. It helps me to connect with my natural surroundings. What appears on the canvas is an internal language that is highly charged and emotional. I paint in watercolours, acrylic gouache and inks. I use watercolours for smaller compositions and acrylic for my bigger works. My paintings speaks of places known or unknown, past or present yet colourful comforting and familiar. Each painting like memories is filled with layer upon layer of paint and the idea is to make every painting unique and bearing its own identity. It is also my quest as an artist to find creativity as an antidote to losses and trials human beings have to confront in their life’s journey. I am also a Visitor Host and Guide at Tate Britain.
